Interviewing Tips for a Successful Job Interview

Punctuality:

Make sure you arrive on time for your scheduled job interview. I have interviewed many people (about me). If there is anything that is more unprofessional that will really cause any interviewer to really question whether or not you should even be considered for the job, is your punctuality.

If you are late for your job interview, your lateness sends a totally different message to your prospective employer. If you are late for your job interview-in the interviewer's mind, you will also be late on the job- not at all a very good way to start out. Don't let being late be the deciding factor against your candidacy. Maybe you just need to consider implementing sound time management tips in keeping your day focused and scheduled if being late is something you are habitually doing.

Develop Self Confidence

You can have all the skill sets and experience and more that the position you are interviewing for requires, but guess what? If you don’t believe you will do well on the interview, you won’t, and you will not succeed in your efforts. You have got to develop the self confidence that you will perform well, that you will get the job.

Where does self confidence come from? It comes from Almighty God You must develop the hope and faith in God and in your God given abilities and talents.

If you want to learn the age old secret of how to succeed in life, put GOD first in your life.. If you can believe it, you can achieve it still holds true today. Conversely, if you don’t believe you WILL , more likely than not you WON'T. Which message are you sending?

Dress for Success

For many this is common sense, however many people do not understand the seriousness of how your appearance can impact and affect whether or not you get the job. A first impression is a lasting impression. Make sure you wear your best suit and/or your best dress/pant suit for the job interview. Dress like you mean business and are serious. If you want to be taken serious-you must dress and ACT the part.

Understanding:

Make sure you are completely familiar with the vacancy position you are applying. Take your time to do some preliminary research on the company so you have a basic understanding and general familiarity with the employer, and more importantly, the skill sets and responsibilities that this position requires that you are being considered.

You have to build a bridge for the interviewer in how your skill sets and previous experience relate and mesh for the position. Employee motivation begins in understanding all you possibly can about the position being advertised. Do not be too wordy , speak succinctly, and with 100% honesty , how your skills relate to this position.

Communicate Clearly and Succinctly:

Do not have any chewing gum or any other food items in your mouth-this is rude and in most cases your job interview will end before it ever began. Make sure you use proper business communication skills, and that you are specific and to the point. Also make sure you answer the questions being asked of you during the job interview and that you tie in and demonstrate how your past positions of employment and skills relate to the position you are being interviewed. Do not ramble.

If there are specific skills and experiences that you want to emphasize to the interviewer and make sure these stand out-it is perfectly acceptable to note specific reference points on a 5-7 note card as talking points. Just put a bullet point list with respect to date and the experience as it relates to the job for which you are being interviewed.

Maintain Eye Contact:

This may sound obvious, but many people fail to maintain proper eye contact during a job interview. How to interview properly, requires proper eye contact at all times. This shows and demonstrates to the interviewer that you are engaging and are paying attention.

If there is anything more annoying to an interviewer, it is a job applicant that is preoccupied looking everywhere else accept focused on the interviewer. Make sure you are 100% focused. Especially in a dismal global economy, with thousands of job applicants competing for the same limited number of openings, you need to sell yourself in why you should be considered for this job.

Never Talk Despairingly About Your Current or Past Employers:

I have interviewed many people who state that they didn't like their past job or supervisor and vent, which during an interview, is not appropriate nor the place. Providing responses that appear to be insulting or rude will only end the job interviewing sooner than you had wanted.

Ask Questions

Remember, an interview is a two way street, you are being questioned to determine if you have the skill sets, experience and temperament for the position, but it is also important for you to raise and ask specific questions as well. Be creative, ask thought probing questions as it pertains to the position and the company. Don’t just ask questions for the sake of asking. Demonstrate that you can think on your feet, in hopefully setting yourself apart from the rest of the pack.

Provide a list of references to your Interviewer

When you have finished the interview, make sure you provide an updated spell checked reference list to provide to your interviewer. It doesn’t matter if they’ve not asked you for this information at this time. This demonstrates your seriousness, preparedness and self motivation , on your part for the position.

Post-Job Interview Follow-Up

Ok, you’ve finished the interview-now what? I believe it is important to send out a brief thank you letter (either conventional snail mail- or e-mail) is acceptable. But mind you, this letter should be very brief.

In essence you want to thank the interviewer for meeting with you (date/time) . In the letter you want to once again tie in your skills and experiences and how they relate to the position being advertised and why you should be considered for the job. But do not phone the interviewer (unless they specifically advise you can).

There are many differing views on the follow-up letter, and I personally believe it is very proper and appropriate business etiquette. If anything, it demonstrates to the interviewer your seriousness for the position and puts your application package on their radar. Just make sure you use proper business communication in your letter.
