Volunteering , and doing volunteer work for a worthwhile cause, is a tremendous way of your demonstrating outward unconditional love and demonstration of stewardship , both in terms of financial/capital resources and your invaluable time.
I heartily applaud you and anyone else that may be considering to be a volunteer, and providing volunteer work; whether in your local city, village or even overseas if that is where you believe you are being called by God to serve.
I served as volunteer with two separate volunteer or volunteer work organizations overseas (India and Bangladesh).
And I am able to comment first hand, what enriching experiences, both of these volunteer work assignments had not only on me.
But I can also attest to its impact upon our lives together and our very happy marriage as well.
Volunteer Work, What You Need to Know
As I stated, volunteer work and volunteering for a just cause whether locally or internationally, can have a tremendous impact not only on the program you are involved in helping those less fortunate, but can also teach you much about yourself as you prepare for future educational or college planning pursuits, or for your future career goals or business goals pursuits in life.
However, if you are not careful in researching and reviewing all volunteer work opportunities, interviewing past and present volunteers, and thoroughly checking out the organization that you will volunteer under, you could be setting yourself up for emotional distraught in your decision making.
Pray About Your Volunteer Work Assignment:
My wife and I served for 1 year overseas with MCC in Bangladesh. I was the Assistant Country Director and my wife worked for a British agency involved with Physically challenged and disabled individuals. However, it was my urging my wife to go with me, in a time when my wife’s mother was experiencing some health challenges and my wife was not really prepared to go at that time. Reluctantly, my wife did join me for the year abroad, but with much consternation, since this was a last minute decision at my urging, without much communication and discussion on my wife’s part which was wrong.
As Christian believers, at that time, I felt that we were being led by God to serve, and we prayed to God in asking Him how to meditate and pray for guidance and wisdom in our decision making. I think it is absolutely important to seek Godly counsel and advise, not only from other fellow believers but in praying to God Himself for all the wisdom you will need, as you prayerfully consider volunteering. You will need all the hope and faith that God can provide, so make sure God is involved in your volunteer work equation.
Make Sure the Job Assignment is in Writing
When my wife and I went to serve as volunteers in our volunteer work in Bangladesh with MCC, my position volunteer work assignment as Assistant Country Director was confirmed both verbally and in standard business writing . However my wife’s position was not confirmed until almost 3 months after we arrived in the country of Bangladesh. They wanted my wife to serve and do her volunteer work in a different field other that physical therapy which is her career field.
After several phone calls and business communication e-mails to MCC headquarters, the Dhaka field office as able to obtain in writing, confirmation for my wife’s volunteer work assignment in the physical therapy field.
This could have been alleviated months earlier if we had insisted upon our confirmation as volunteers, that we had my wife’s volunteer work assignment in writing before our flight departure overseas. Although all things did eventually work out, much of our stress management could have been easily elevated had I been more adamant in the beginning.
It is so important to make sure you have everything in writing upfront before you embark on your volunteer work journey, so there are no surprises and any misunderstandings once you begin your volunteering.
Develop and Implement Sound Money Management Skills
During our brief year tenure with MCC Bangladesh as volunteers, we both received a very small financial stipend.
Depending upon your particular volunteer work program, you may or may not be entitled to a stipend.
It is so vitally important to make sure you are fully aware of all your costs before you sign on the dotted line in your travel planning .
The last thing you need to be worrying about is your finances in your volunteering.
Make sure you’re aware of all your costs, and that you have sufficient monies to cover all costs, including emergency medical costs as well. Lastly, you need to stick to your plan, it just requires self discipline , and self motivation on your part.
