Maybe you too are thinking of international living and retiring abroad.
Ok, you've decided upon retiring abroad, but what factors in your decision making process do you use in deciding where you want to live?
Obviously where you decide in retiring abroad, is just as important as your financial money management , in making sure you have enough financial resources set aside for your international living needs.
Assuming you have already thoroughly checked and researched with your employer’s retirement benefits program, or benefits administrator regarding your stocks, 401 K, mutual funds, annuities , or any other retirement vehicles you may own, then you can begin deciding upon what region of the world do you want to spend your retirement years.
Always consult with your present tax advisor as living overseas can be very different with respect to taxable income and any pensions or annuities you may own.
The idea in retirement is to hang on and keep most of your hard earned money you’ve saved diligently through the years through your self discipline. What you need to understand and clarify is how much of your retirement dollars are subject to taxes in your new “host country”.
Each country is different and you may be subject to taxes on your income wealth both in your home country of origin/nationality as well as your retirement abroad country host. I am not trying to dissuade you from retiring-abroad, on the contrary. I just want you to be pro-active in the questions you will need to ask to ensure your financial needs and concerns are addressed.
Retirement Abroad Resources...
There are many excellent resources at your disposal that you can research such as internationalliving.com as well as the US State Department's embassy list which you access here US embassy.gov
You will also need to check and determine what restrictions , if any will apply to you as a retiring abroad foreign national. World governments have different rules and regulations for expats and foreign nationals then the rest of the population. The important thing is to do all your research and planning before you’ve packed your bags and have sold off your house and other items before your move.
What About Your Health Care When Retiring Abroad?
Have you given any thought to your anticipated health care needs while living overseas?
What about any unforeseen medical emergencies?
Some health insurance policies may only be applicable for coverage, in the country of domicile residence, not the host country in which you plan on spending your retirement years living abroad.
This is why it is always advisable to consult with your present medical insurance Provider.
It is far better to do your due diligence now before you have your boarding pass in hand involved in your last minute travel planning before you show up n the tarmac of your host country.
